Ceiling Medallions
Polyurethane Ceiling Medallions for Chandeliers and Light Fixtures
A ceiling medallion frames a chandelier, pendant or other light fixture, or stands on its own as a ceiling focal point. Spectis ceiling medallions are cast in high-density polyurethane (urethane) and ship double primed, ready for your final paint.
Round medallions run from 12⅜ in to 60 in across. Oval, oblong, diamond and rectangular ceiling medallions include 12 × 21 in and 27 × 17½ in oblongs, a 46 × 71 in oval, 31⅜ × 36¾ in and 44 × 71 in diamonds, and a 29¾ × 41⅝ in rectangle. Styles range from smooth, stepped and beaded rims to leaf borders, floral sunbursts and ornate scroll and acanthus designs.
Ceiling medallions for chandeliers and light fixtures. Order by the overall diameter, or the width and length, shown in the product name, not by the center-hole size. Some models have a center opening (from ¾ in to 6 in where one is listed), and others have a solid center. Make sure your fixture canopy covers the opening. A medallion is decorative and does not carry the fixture, so the chandelier, light or fan must be supported on its own. To install, center the medallion on the canopy or a mark on the ceiling, bed the back in ADH100 polyurethane adhesive and fasten it to a solid ceiling. Related trim: ceiling rosettes and ceiling rings.
How to Choose a Ceiling Medallion Size
The right size depends on the fixture, the room and the ceiling height. A medallion that is too small disappears behind the canopy; one that is too large overwhelms the light. Start with these guidelines, then check the drawing on each product page:
- Match the fixture: a medallion about one-half to two-thirds the width of the chandelier or fixture usually looks balanced. A 30 in chandelier pairs well with a 16 to 20 in medallion.
- Match the room: rooms under about 12 x 12 ft suit 12 to 20 in medallions; dining rooms and bedrooms 20 to 30 in; large living rooms, foyers and great rooms 30 in and up.
- Consider ceiling height: on 9 ft and higher ceilings, go a size up so the detail reads from the floor. On 8 ft ceilings, a flatter, low-projection design keeps the room feeling open.
- Ceiling fans: keep the medallion smaller than the blade span and allow clearance between the blades and the medallion's raised detail.
- Center hole: the fixture canopy must cover the opening. Order by overall diameter, not by hole size.

Ceiling Medallion Styles
Smooth and stepped medallions suit modern, transitional and farmhouse rooms. Beaded and rope rims add a fine classic edge. Leaf and scroll borders frame a plain center, so the canopy sits cleanly. Floral and sunburst medallions radiate from the fixture and work well in dining rooms. Ornate scroll and acanthus medallions are the grand choice for Victorian, Georgian and formal foyers. For a long dining table or a rectangular room, choose an oval, square or diamond ceiling medallion that follows the table's shape.
Large Ceiling Medallions
For foyers, two-story rooms and great rooms, a large ceiling medallion of 36 to 60 in creates a true focal point and can even stand alone without a fixture. Spectis large medallions include 45 and 60 in acanthus leaf designs, a 45¼ in ornate rococo pattern, a 60 in smooth stepped model and 44 x 71 in and 46 x 71 in shaped medallions. Because polyurethane is light, even a 60 in medallion can be installed with adhesive and screws into ceiling framing, with no heavy plaster work.
Why Polyurethane Ceiling Medallions?
Traditional plaster medallions are heavy, fragile and slow to install. High-density polyurethane holds the same crisp, deep detail at a fraction of the weight, will not crack or crumble, and can be cut, drilled and fastened with ordinary tools. Spectis medallions arrive primed white and ready to paint, so you can finish them in ceiling white, pick out the detail in a second color or apply a metallic glaze.
Installing a Ceiling Medallion
Turn off power at the breaker and lower the fixture canopy (or have an electrician do it). Center the medallion over the junction box, bed the back in ADH100 polyurethane adhesive, and fasten it into ceiling joists or solid blocking with finish screws or nails. Fill holes, caulk the outer edge and paint, then rehang the fixture. The medallion is trim only; the fixture must stay supported by its own box. See our ceiling medallion installation guide for details.

Ceiling Medallion FAQs
What is a ceiling medallion?
A ceiling medallion is a round or shaped decorative piece mounted on the ceiling, usually around a chandelier, pendant or ceiling fan, to frame the fixture and add architectural detail.
What size ceiling medallion should I choose?
Aim for about one-half to two-thirds the width of the fixture, then check it against the room: 12 to 20 in for small rooms, 20 to 30 in for dining rooms and bedrooms, and 30 in and up for large rooms and foyers. See how to choose a ceiling medallion size.
Can I install a ceiling medallion with an existing light fixture?
Yes, if the fixture canopy covers the medallion's center opening. Choose a model with a center opening (listed sizes run from ¾ in to 6 in), or ask Spectis before modifying a solid-center model. The fixture must stay supported on its own.
Will a ceiling medallion support my chandelier?
No. The medallion is decorative ceiling trim. A chandelier, light or ceiling fan must be supported independently by a rated box.
How do I install a ceiling medallion?
Switch off the circuit, lower the canopy, center the medallion, bed the back in ADH100 polyurethane adhesive and fasten it into joists or blocking. Fill, caulk and paint, then rehang the fixture.
Can I use a ceiling medallion with a ceiling fan?
Yes. Choose a medallion smaller than the blade span with enough clearance between the blades and the raised detail, and make sure the fan is mounted to a fan-rated box.
Do polyurethane ceiling medallions need to be primed?
No. They ship primed white and ready for latex paint.
What is the difference between a ceiling medallion and a ceiling rosette?
The terms overlap. On our site, medallions are the larger, more detailed pieces, usually 12 in and up, while rosettes are smaller, simpler accents.
Can I use a ceiling medallion without a light fixture?
Yes. A large medallion can stand alone as a ceiling focal point; choose a solid-center model or fill the opening with a small rosette.
